Join us as a volunteer at the Polar Bear Habitat!

We currently have volunteer positions available in the Animal Care and General Maintenance departments. These positions are best suited to those who can dedicate at least one scheduled shift per week with a minimum of one hour in the Maintenance department and three hours in the Animal Care department per shift. No experience necessary, all training will be provided.

Animal Care:

Primary duties - Food preparation

Cut and portion the bears diet, including fish, moose, seal and produce items for the next day. Stock and thaw frozen food as needed.

Secondary duties - organize, clean and create enrichments for the bears. Perform daily enclosure checks and enrichment provision. General cleaning of bear holding and additional tasks as needed.

Requirements: Must be 16 years or older. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be time efficient and able to follow directions. No animal food preparation experience necessary but must be comfortable handling raw meat and fish.

Safety training will be provided for working in the bear holding building.

General Maintenance

Primary duties - Shovelling snow in the winter, cleaning public areas including the Viewers Building and Welcome Centre, painting buildings, assisting staff in completing additional duties as needed.

Requirements: Must be 16 years or older. Must be able to work efficiently in a team and independently. Comfortable speaking with guests while completing tasks around the facility. Ability to stand for long periods of time and heavy lifting.
